Raspberry Pi part 2

Raspberry Pi Case DANO 2

Ready for more Pi?  I hope so because here are images of the case assembly.  The outer shell consists of two pieces of injection molded plastic with a thin thermoformed insert window that snaps into the upper shell.  (locking mechanisms TBD upon board arrival)

The purpose of the window is to let students peek inside the computer and gain an appreciation for the hardware itself.

For those who need full access to the on board controllers, simply remove the window and plug away.

For custom builders, the window may be trimmed to allow for access to the parts needed while covering the parts that are not.

Raspberry Pi

A muse can come in all shapes and forms.  This week my muse was a card-sized computer named Raspberry Pi.  This little wonder sells for $25 and hopes to inspire the next generation of programmers and tech enthusiasts.  I couldn’t help but design a case for it.

Approval

Since last I updated the blog, I was able to go to Paramount to get Stephen’s likeness approved.  I wandered onto the sound stage and quickly found myself standing in the middle of a fake bathroom wondering where to go.  A sympathetic grip directed me through Roque Records to a room lined with gold records on the wall and a Stephen Kramer Glickman sitting at the piano.

Between takes I was able to show Steve the piece, who flipped out (in a good way) and subsequently showed it to everyone else on set.  There was a range of opinions, “the expression is perfect,” “why are his hands so big,” but the most praise came from that helpful grip who helped me find Steve who commented on just about every facet.  By this time the grip was behind a series of important looking monitors and sitting in a chair marked “Producer”.

The scene again changed and I packed up my things to go – only to find out that the set change resulted in me sitting in a room with four walls and no doors.  I waited a little longer and was able to sneak out down a hallway covered in pancakes and syrup…and once again ended up in the fake bathroom.  I think when I unveil the vinyl piece, I’ll just have Steve meet me at Canter’s instead.

The Sculpt

As promised here are the images.  I gave the piece a McFarlane toys meets Playmobil kind of vibe that blends both detail, as seen in the brow and drapery, and abstraction as found in the hands and eyes.  It was a fun experiment to blend two styles that are generally at the opposite ends of the aesthetic spectrum.  Accessories are still lacking, but they will be more fun as a separate post.

How did I do it?  I created a wire armature by braiding copper welding rods around themselves and posing them like Steve.  I then used HBX-2 clay to build up the figure.  HBX-2 is great to work with because it is very malleable when heated and able to hold detail when it cools down.  The plus side to this clay is that it allows you to achieve a very expressive sculpture, the downside is that I can’t achieve a true “toy smooth” surface with it – but that will come later.

Next Post… Getting approval on the likeness.

Introducing Project SKG

Since the idea behind this blog is to give people the experience of creating a toy from the back of the mind to the front of the shelf, the first post will be dedicated to subject selection.  In this case, the subject just happens to be an up and coming comic by the name of Steven Kramer Glickman (SKG) who spends most of his life on Melrose avenue performing at the Improv and Paramount Studios.  Since the Vinyl scene in Los Angeles also revolves around Melrose Ave (Munky King, Kid Robot, Gallery 1988) I thought that I would make him the subject for the first piece on the site.  He’s also happens to be my friend, writing partner and my excuse to drive to Los Angeles to watch stand up.  So Steven, this one’s for you.

…Stay tuned for more images of the sculpt
